Spirit of Christmas
Tibet Cafe, by Tseten Choedon
Recently we were invited as parents and children to celebrate Christmas at the Buddhist Centre in Vienna, Austria. Many people from different nationalities participated and it turned out to be a real occasion of joy and sharing.
Many might wonder why I celebrate Christmas as a Buddhist. Well, I simply look to the Spirit of Christmas - a celebration of families and friends gathering without the usual stress which people normally squeeze in their daily lives for whatever reasons. On Christmas one sits at leisure with ones loved ones...cooking and eating together, exchanging gifts, making meaningful conversations and where necessary apologising and forgiving. Isn't it wonderful?
Christmas is also an occasion for me to realize that we are HUMANS first and the religion comes later. Sadly though, like on most happy occasions, Christmas is also the time when people consume more animals and animal products than usual, indirectly contributing to the suffering of animals which are raised only for fulfilling the greedy taste buds which many hang on to.
Let us make this Christmas even more meaningful and more Humane by pledging to become a Vegetarian and if your heart allows, to become a Vegan.
I wish all the Tibet Café visitors a Merry Christmas, Fröhliches Weihnachten and a fascinating New year / Neus Jahr-2008.
